Case Details

Applicant T came to our services in Year 10. In our ice-breaking session, we identified his strong interest in mathematics, philosophy, and a variety of complex social issues. Therefore, we suggested he showcase his interests in academic and community engagements, and encouraged him to be more involved in mathematics competitions.

T materialised our admission plan, establishing a STEM-related initiative at his school, which is a public school, and, with our help, built up a mathematics competition group consisting of contestants from all around Australia. But more impressively, he made remarkable progress in his journey of competitive mathematics. After being selected for the national camp at the end of Year 10, he became more entralled in mathematics and more willing to be devoted to the subject.

Competitive mathematics, or Olympiad maths, is very demanding. In Australia, an International Mathematical Olympiad medal might give high school students an edge in admission to MIT and Oxbridge; however, the preparation is so consuming that students would have to give up a lot of other commitments, which are essential for admission to other prestigious institutions. At the beginning of Year 11, we at Elite Admission and the family of T sat together and had a thorough discussion on whether he should have an “all-in” mentality for competitive mathematics. We decided to adjust his workload on activities smartly so he could have more time to push for the Olympiad, while closely monitoring his progress and gauging his chance to be a part of the national Olympiad team.

T kept thriving in Olympiad maths. By the end of Year 11, after seeing his chance to compete in the IMO being very positive, we helped his family make the decision of “all-in”. Preparing the application work, HSC, and the IMO at the same time is challenging. We designed a feasible and efficient timetable for T and helped him at every stage to save his time, including communicating with his school’s inexperienced career team for recommendations. Eventually, the decision and collaboration played out very well. With his exceptional talent, T won the gold medal in the IMO in Year 12 and received admission to the two dream schools of his, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Cambridge.

Summary

T’s journey is fulfilled mainly by his unique passion and talent for mathematics. At the same time, he had a professional and experienced team help him predict his position in the admission preparation, make the best decisions together, and save his time in the hectic and stressful final year of high school. This is the value Elite Admission is always proud to deliver.
