Applicant W is one of our few clients located in mainland China. He sought our services at the end of Year 11, and by that time he had achieved solid scores in SAT, SAT Subject Tests, Advanced Placement and TOEFL, and was ranked very top of his cohort. However, he still had not really developed his interest in computer science in depth or with a plan, making his application impossible to stand out among the numerous similar applicants in China. Consequently, our job started from here.

Though we were unable to talk face-to-face, we still managed to have some quality conversations online, which helped us understand and get to know Applicant W a lot more, especially the fact that he was not only interested in computer science but passionate about a large range of social sciences. Based on this point, we found a series of papers and other readings for him to investigate and gradually helped him come up with a multidisciplinary application theme. Accordingly, we further developed a highly feasible action plan for him to enhance his resume to explore this theme and show his passion and leadership. Specifically, we brought up quite a few novel ideas in terms of developing activities that made his resume unique compared with most of other applicants in China.

Brainstorming the Common Application personal essay online was a challenging job; however, the ice-breaking session and collaboration prior had made it feasible. After digging out quite a few stories about Applicant W, we built up a story linking his favorite book series with an important life experience, which demonstrated both his true personality and struggles, making it an engaging piece. In the rest of essays, we cooperated smoothly and efficiently online, successfully bringing up his wonderful qualities and experiences on paper.

In the end, Applicant W received the only one of the two admissions to University of California Berkeley in his region, the only admission to UCLA’s highly selective Samueli School of Engineering, and the only admission to Georgia Institute of Technology’s College of Computing, proving the competitiveness of his application material.

Summary

Under the tension between America and China in terms of technological competitions, the rumor is that it is increasingly challenging for Chinese students to study the STEM majors in prestigious US colleges like University of California – Berkeley. However, Applicant W’s successful case proves it is still possible to do so as long as the application material is persuasive.

Also, long-distance collaboration on college admission can be totally feasible and highly effective if applicants and consultants keep close contact and foster a solid understanding and trust of each other.
